An ascender is a vital piece of equipment for climbers. Basically an ascender is a mechanical device which allows the climber to climb without the possibility of slipping down the rope. The ascender fits easily over the rope, and when a downward motion is detected, such as slipping or even a fall, then a locking mechanism occurs and keeps the climber from falling.
